The Donald Cup is our local Doddie Aid challenge, proudly based at East Dorset Dockers RFC, and is all about bringing people together to get active, have fun, and raise vital funds for motor neurone disease (MND).
Doddie Aid is a nationwide fitness challenge created by former Scotland captain and British & Irish Lion Rob Wainwright, inspired by his friend and teammate Doddie Weir. It supports My Name’5 Doddie Foundation, which funds life-changing research into MND and provides practical support for people living with the condition.
Since launching in 2021, Doddie Aid has raised over £6 million, involved more than 100,000 people, and seen over 11 million miles logged worldwide. It’s simple, inclusive, and open to everyone – you move in whatever way suits you, knowing that every effort helps make a real difference.
The Donald Cup
Set up in 2023 by Ben and Esther Donald, the Donald Cup is a friendly annual competition between:
Mrs D’s Marvels, captained by Esther
Mr D’s Destroyers, captained by Ben
It brings together colleagues from Dorset Healthcare (NHS) Bournemouth, Poole & Christchurch Council (BCP) along with friends, family, and the wider community. As the event has grown, East Dorset Dockers has become our home base, hosting social events and providing a welcoming hub that encourages everyone to take part.
Impact so far
Together, Donald Cup participants have achieved:
£5,470.50 raised for Doddie Aid and the MND community
24,414.84 miles covered since the competition began - that’s nearly once around the world!!!!!!
The Donald Cup 2026 – Year 4
The Donald Cup returns for its fourth year, raising money for Doddie Aid and supporting the wider MND community. Last year the deadlock was broken, with the Destroyers taking a 2–1 lead overall.
Can the Marvels fight back and level it up, or will the Destroyers pull further ahead?
Whatever the result, this is our favourite time of year – bringing people together, staying active, raising awareness of MND, and having a great time along the way.
