East Dorset Dockers RFC recently partnered with local guiding groups to help more than 170 girls earn their Love Rugby badge. Fun, non-contact, skills based sessions that gently progressed over the summer.
The initiative was led and organised by Dockers women’s player, U13s coach, and club volunteer Megan Wetherick. After receiving an enquiry from a local Guides group, Megan put her hand up to take it forward — planning and delivering a series of rugby workshops supported by our youth coaching team and senior women's players..
Together, they created fun, inclusive sessions that combined creative activity, ball skills, and teamwork games, giving girls the chance to experience rugby in a safe and welcoming environment.
Reflecting on the success of the programme, Megan said:
“It was fantastic to see so many girls try rugby for the first time, and love it. Women’s rugby is going great guns at the moment, and hopefully the combination of initiatives like this, combined with seeing more rugby heroes on telly, can inspire a new generation of girls to take up the game and get involved at their local community rugby clubs.”
The sessions left the girls buzzing with energy and confidence — heading home with smiles (and badges!) after trying something completely new. It was a brilliant showcase of what our club stands for: community, inclusion, and growing the game for the next generation.
A huge thank you to Megan, our youth coaches, and the local guiding groups who made it all possible.
